“We’re hot right now,” says Petty. “It’s coming easy – no struggle. If I didn’t have a tour, I’d probably just stay in the studio.” But since Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers do have their usual massive laps through arenas and more, they’re set on playing plenty of songs from their blazing new live studio album, Mojo. “I think we take it to the road and it will take on its own life,” says Petty. The tour will focus on mainly the new songs from Mojo but classic hits will also be featured. According to guitarist Mike Campbell it can be tricky balancing the new with the old. “The problem we have every year, and I guess we’ll have it worse this year, is trying to get enough songs in the set that people want to hear – but also play the new stuff,” says Campbell.
One of the songs, Don’t Pull Me Over, is about legalizing pot. Petty’s viewpoint on that is, “We could solve a lot of problems with the tax money, and the medical benefits are well proven. Pretending that America isn’t using marijuana is ridiculous, so I’m glad I got that statement in. The said, the pot store doesn’t look right to me. Why wouldn’t it be sold at a pharmacy like any other prescription?”
Another song on the new album, titled Running Man’s Bible, is a tribute to bassist Howie Epstein who died in 2003 from a suspected heroine overdose. Petty says, “I’d always wanted to deal with Howie’s death, and there’s some of that in there. It’s one of those embarrassingly revealing songs. It just crept into my mind one day. I was playing the guitar and it started falling out and I wrote it down as quick as I could.” The song is about the band sticking together for 35 years. “We respect the band as more important than our individual problems, and we’re getting along ridiculously well. It’s disgusting to see old men so happy.”

The Warped Tour punk festival is now in its 15th year with the new various mutations of emo joining original musical groups from its inception in the 1990s. 1990 vets like Pennywise and Dropkick Murphy’s co-exist with upstarts like electro-pop act Breathe Carolina, acoustic crooner Never Shout Never and mainstream rockers All-American Rejects. Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter states, “We started out playing Warped. It’s a big pissing contest – everyone wants to show that they’re the best.” Also making appearances will be bands Everclear, Mike Posner, Of Mice and Men, Sum 41, and many, many more. Check out the official Warped Tour site for complete information.
The re-launch of Lilith Fair, which originally ran from 1997-1999, is inspired by female artists ruling the billboards once again. Sarah McLachlan, co-founder of Lilith and the only artist on all 36 dates remarks, “It’s an interesting time to return. We can build on the legacy of Lilith. There’s new artists we can draw from, as well as artists we had the first time around.” The musical lineup will change nightly with appearances by Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, The Bangles, Sugarland, Cat Power, Indigo Girls, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Heart, and others. When I heard on the radio that the annual Kansas City Rockfest concert tickets were on sale, I was so excited. Especially when they announced the line up, and it included my favorite band Papa Roach. I wanted to see them so bad that I rushed to my home computer and logged onto the internet to purchase my tickets. What made ordering the tickets online so easy was that I bundle clear internet with tv so its cheaper and the internet is lightening fast. Rockfest is presented by Kansas City’s radio station 98.9 The Rock, and takes place at Liberty Memorial in downtown Kansas City.
The day of the concert it rained all day. This didn’t spoil the fun however, because it was a rain or shine event. The rain made the ground muddy, but this did not stop over 50,000 people from having the time of their lives! People rocked out to many bands including Godsmack, Seether, Three Days Grace, and of course Papa Roach. I got to hear my favorite singer of all time, Jacoby Shaddix (front man for Papa Roach) sing his heart out. He sounded so amazing, and looked very nice too! He had the fans wound up and having a great time!
The best part about the entire concert is that Jacoby and the rest of the band Papa Roach were signing autographs after their performance! My friends and I all got a special signature from Jacoby Shaddix! This was the summer event of a lifetime that I will never forget.

With all the personal things going on in his life last year – his father passing last August followed by the birth of his third child (a girl) a month later – Jack Johnson had no plans to release an album this year but “To the Sea” was released in June and debuted at number one on Billboard. “…all these songs just came out,” Johnson says. He’s excited to strum fan favorites but also anxious to dig into new electric guitar heavy tunes (“At or With Me”). He’s “trippin’ out” over his first-ever gig at Madison Square Garden but he’s also excited about the small-town shows because “That’s where the crowds blow us away.”
Jack Johnson will not earn a single dime from his 2010 summer tour. That’s because the singer is donating all of his profits to various education and eco charities. (Read more about the Jack Johnson’s “To the Sea Tour Greening” and “All at Once”) “Just to know that the money goes to things like community gardens makes it feel like work worth doing,” Johnson says.

Even though musicians are struggling with ticket sales in this tough economy, Lady Gaga is having the most success with her concert ticket sales. With high-sky productions costs for her elaborate stage show ticket prices still average a reasonable $92. Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball Tour has a 10-foot-long sea monster that makes the twisted costumes and arty video clips of the 2009 run seem restrained. Despite all the stunts in the show, Lady Gaga always leaves room for improvisation.
